Princeton, N.J., Nov. 25, 2015 – Hispanics Inspiring Students’ Performance and Achievement (HISPA) will celebrate volunteers and present awards to collaborators at its 2016 Three Kings Banquet on January 14 at Pines Manor in Edison, NJ. The event will gather over 300 leaders from the public and private sectors.
The Banquet celebrates the contributions of over 2,000 supporters who participate in HISPA’s educational programs, which unite Latino role models with middle school students to inspire them to stay in school and use education to fulfill their dreams. Now in its eighth year, HISPA conducts its programs throughout New Jersey, New York City, San Antonio and Florida.
The Three Kings (the Three Wise Men) Banquet coincides with the traditional gift-giving period of the Nativity in Spanish-speaking countries. HISPA selected this theme to thank those whose gift of inspiring students assures their achievement.
HISPA will present its “Transform” award to the Verizon Foundation as Sponsor of the Year, its “Inspire” award to UPS’ Latino Business Resource Group, Crecer, as Champion of the Year, and its “Share” award to AT&T engineer Mayra Cáceres as Role Model of the Year.
HISPA uses several criteria in choosing award recipients, including a demonstrated commitment to HISPA’s mission; Hispanic employee participation in HISPA events; and donations, contributions, in-kind services and personal dedication.
The Verizon Foundation has enabled HISPA to engage students in 18 months of specialized app development programs, STEM-focused Youth Conferences and corporate visits. Verizon Hispanic Service Organization (HSO), furthermore, had the second largest number of HISPA volunteers of any organization in 2014-15.
UPS Crecer members made HISPA’s Role Model Program and Youth Conferences possible in New Jersey and New York City and also supported the leadership development of NJ Governor’s Hispanic Fellows. Mayra Cáceres’ decade of HISPA contributions include co-designing the Youth Conference curriculum and serving as a Youth Conference Advisor for 17 conferences.
“Our award recipients exemplify the gifts that HISPA brings to students,” says Dr. Ivonne Díaz-Claisse, founder and president of HISPA. “They tell inspirational stories that showcase the power of education and inspire students to realize their dreams."
The evening’s keynote speaker will be Juan Pérez, UPS Vice President of Technology. Pérez helped establish UPS Crecer and is the group’s executive sponsor. He has participated actively in the HISPA Role Model Program and knows firsthand the importance of role models. His grandfather was a civil engineer in Cuba, and his father was a textiles engineer in Mexico. Pérez’ educational and professional journey is a vivid example of the power of dedication and hard work.
