Princeton, NJ - National nonprofit organization HISPA (Hispanics Inspiring Students' Performance and Achievement) is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month by announcing their newest initiative, VISION 2020, an effort to recruit Hispanic role models to share 20,000 inspirational stories with local students, at their annual HISPA Role Model Program Kick-Off and Recruiting Event themed, “Honoring Our Stories, Building America’s Future”. Hosted by UPS and UPS Crecer at UPS Mahwah on September 28 at 6:00 pm, the event will bring together professionals from public and private sectors dedicated to inspiring our youth.
Since 2008, HISPA’s mission has been to mobilize Latino professionals to serve as role models in schools where they live and work and share their personal and professional journeys, highlighting their accomplishments to encourage students to dream big and achieve their dreams through education. They began with the “100 Role Models in 100 Hours” recruitment effort. HISPA has now grown to a network of over 2,000 volunteers and has reached over 7,000 students in New Jersey, New York City, San Antonio and Florida. This year, HISPA programs will expand to reach 16 schools across New Jersey and in New York City, and 23 total schools across the country.
HISPA has now set its sights even higher with VISION 2020, which aims to mobilize thousands of Latino professional to volunteer and share their inspirational stories with local youth by year 2020. As role models in HISPA’s educational programs, they will visit students in their school classrooms, welcome students to tour their workplaces, and unite on university campuses for youth conferences, all while emphasizing the importance of continuing education.
“By visiting schools and sharing our inspirational stories, we provide hope, and hope is key to overcoming obstacles towards higher education,” said Dr. Ivonne Díaz-Claisse, HISPA president and CEO. “With this education, Latino students will be able to contribute to America’s future.”
The agenda for the evening includes keynote speaker, UPS Chief Information Officer Juan Perez, who is also a HISPA Role Model. Guests will also learn about HISPA, VISION 2020, and ways to get involved from the organization and UPS leaders as well as members of UPS’ Latino Employee Business Resource Group, Crecer, who have been recognized numerous times as one of HISPA’s most active volunteer group.
“Our employee Latino business resource group’s involvement with HISPA has had a lasting impact in the lives of middle- and high-school students in communities where children need role models and examples to motivate them to stay in school and pursue a college education,” said Pérez.
HISPA events are made possible by HISPA’s Annual Partners: AT&T, Comcast, ESPN, ETS, Verizon, Visa, and Southwest Airlines, HISPA’s official airline partner. In addition, the HISPA Role Model Program in New Jersey and New York City is funded by grants provided by: PSEG Foundation, Wells Fargo Foundation, Comcast Foundation, Novartis, PNC Bank, Investors Bank Foundation and Roma Foundation.
