Joseph Acaba, an educator, hydrogeologist, and the first Puerto Rican NASA astronaut. In May 2004 he became the first person of Puerto Rican heritage to be named as a NASA astronaut candidate when he was selected as a member of NASA Astronaut Training Group 19.

Richard L. Canas grew up a Salvadoran immigrant in California with a dream of working in law enforcement. He went to college and became a police officer. Today, he heads New Jersey's Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness.

Joanna Clark, HISPA San Diego Champion, reaches out to her AT&T colleagues and her professional network to recruit local volunteers in support of our first event in San Diego.
The Summit Area YMCA Achiever Program sponsored a Latino Leadership Institute seminar supported by HISPA Role Model Bureau, (Hispanics Inspiring Student Performance and Achievement), and in partnership with the Summit Board of Education on Friday, October 24 at Summit High School. Over 45 Latino students attended this event along with teaching and administrative staff.

HISPA Kicks Off National Hispanic Professionals Mentoring Program in New Jersey
Perth Amboy, New Jersey – HISPA President, Dr. Ivonne Diaz-Claisse, participated as a role model at the Shull School in Perth Amboy on November 14, 2007. Dr. Diaz-Claisse shared her educational experience with over 350 eighth grade students. She explained how her passion for mathematics led her to learn about the Chaos Theory and to pursue a PhD degree.
