Role Model Program

HISPA Role Model Program held at Academy of Engineering in San Diego, California

San Diego, California – January 16, 2009 –HISPA hosts its first HISPA Role Model Program in Madison High School in San Diego California. Joanna Clark, HISPA San Diego Champion, reaches out to her AT&T colleagues and her professional network to recruit local volunteers in support of our first event in San Diego. HISPA plans to continue identifying and coordinating role model visits for this Academy of Engineering as a pilot effort in San Diego.

“Thank you for all the hard work you put in to securing role models for the Design and Technology Academy at Madison High School in San Diego, CA for national mentoring day. The role models were terrific. The students were attentive to what they had to say, responded well to questions, and they were very interested in the technology samples that the role models brought to show them. I am very thankful to you and HISPA for providing the role model program as a resource for schools. It is helpful that HISPA understands what kind of speakers are best suited for classroom presentations for young teenagers. The presenters from AT&T brought incentive gift cards to encourage students to ask and answer questions, hands-on examples of current technology being used in the field for their new U-verse service, and they themselves were diverse individuals who connected well with the students and were comfortable speaking to a sometimes excitable audience. Attached are pictures from event. I will be sending pictures in several e-mails due to the size of the photos. Thanks again for everything.” – Greg Williams, our main contact in Madison HS.

HISPA President, Dr. Diaz-Claisse introduced HISPA to staff and administrators from 13 Academies of Engineering last summer at the 2008 NAF Institute for Staff Development in Orlando, Florida. It was then when Greg Williams learned about HISPA and how this collaboration was initiated.

Heartfelt thanks to the wonderful role models that took time from their busy schedule to share their stories with the students at Madison HS. Thank you Kevin Gonzalgo (Center Sales Manager, AT&T Consumer Sales and Service), Trent Munoz (Area Manager AT&T Network Services), Joanna Clark (Associate Director, AT&T University Relations) and Dr. Jacqueline F. Azize-Brewer (Associate Director, NSF CAMP Bridge to the Doctorate, University of California, San Diego.)
