FREEHOLD, NJ – The HISPA Role Model Bureau, a national New Jersey-based non-profit organization dedicated to providing professional Hispanic role models for young students, will honor key supporters and celebrate its achievements from the past year at its Annual Three Kings Banquet on Thursday, Jan. 13, 6:00 p.m., at Seabra’s Armory in Perth Amboy.
Awards will be presented to:
- Jorge Cardenas, Vice President Gas Delivery, PSE&G, selected as Role Model of the Year, will receive the SHARE award in recognition of the significant number of his speaking engagements since 2008, his advocacy for HISPA within his community, and support of annual events. He will also serve as the event’s keynote speaker.
- Marian Croak, Vice President TDM/IP Voice, AT&T Labs, selected as Champion of the Year, will receive the INSPIRE award, in recognition of corporate support provided for HISPA key events, including youth conferences held at Princeton University in 2009 and 2010.
- ETS, selected as Corporate Sponsor of the Year, will receive the TRANSFORM award, for providing offices for HISPA at its Princeton campus, sponsoring the HISPA Role Model Program in Trenton, and supporting and encouraging its employees to take active roles with HISPA. Yvette Donado Senior Vice President, People, Process and Communications and Chief Administrative Officer, serves on HISPA’s Board of Directors.
“Our annual Three Kings Banquet is an opportunity for HISPA to recognize and express our gratitude to those who have stepped forward and enthusiastically embraced our mission to make a difference in the lives of students,” said Dr. Ivonne Díaz-Claisse, president and founder of HISPA, which kicked off its third year in October 2010. “We are also celebrating the exciting growth we have experienced these past years thanks to our supporters, which is allowing us to reach even more children.”
The Annual Three Kings Banquet is HISPA’s main fundraising event. This year’s sponsors are – Platinum: AT&T; Gold: Investors Savings Bank, Pfizer; Silver: ETS; and Bronze: Argent Associates; AT&T’s HACEMOS; Elizabethtown Gas, Merck, Novartis and Novartis Hispanic Leadership Network; Merck and Merck Hispanos Organization; and Samsung.
In the 2009-2010 year, HISPA, which stands for Hispanics Inspiring Students’ Performance and Achievement. doubled the number of volunteers serving as role models, bringing the total to more than 400. The majority of the role models are in the STEM fields: Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.
One of HISPA’s key strategies is to support existing educational programs in which at least half of the students are Hispanic. In the past two years, members of HISPA’s Role Model Bureau have shared their life stories – with an emphasis on educational achievements and professional accomplishments – during visits with more than 2,500 students, providing them an opportunity to learn about career possibilities in a variety of fields, including business, science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
In 2011, recurring HISPA Role Model Programs will be held in New Brunswick, Trenton, Newark, Perth Amboy, Freehold, Red Bank, Summit and Jersey City. And in line with its mission to partner with existing organizations that have mentoring programs, HISPA will continue supporting Hudson County-based Save Latin America’s “Reaching Our Dreams” mentoring program, which is run by Johnny Torres, in Passaic, Paterson and Jersey City.
In addition to the visits with students, HISPA held youth conferences at Princeton University in June 2009 and June 2010. A third conference was held Oct. 21, 2010 in Dallas, Texas, in a partnership between HISPA and AT&T’s HACEMOS (Latino employee resource group).
HISPA’s goals are:
- To reduce the drop-out rates by targeting middle schools students and emphasizing the importance of higher education in each role model presentation.
- To further develop strategic alliances with employee resource groups, professional organizations and alumni networks in order to select, recruit and support a pool of role models.
- To become a one-stop resource that provides access to thousands of professional Hispanic role models willing to share their motivational stories on an ongoing basis to schools and community-based educational programs.
- To support and expand existing community-based educational programs with similar goals that have an existing need for a Hispanic pool of role models.
