PSEG Foundation, Adelante and HISPA Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month
Newark, NJ, October 20, 2015 – The PSEG Foundation and PSEG’s Hispanic/Latino Employee Business Resource Group Adelante will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month by hosting the HISPA Role Model Program Kick-Off and Recruiting Event on Tuesday, October 20 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at PSEG’s Corporate Headquarters in Newark, N.J. The event, themed “Honoring Our Stories, Building America’s Future,” will bring together Latino professionals dedicated to inspiring our youth, including leaders from HISPA and Adelante as well as those from academia, government, corporate and non-profit sectors. CoolSpeak will present HISPA’s Role Model training program “Know Your Role, Model the Change” prior to the kick-off event.
HISPA (Hispanics Inspiring Students’ Performance and Achievement) is a New Jersey-based nonprofit organization dedicated to mobilizing Latino professionals to serve as role models in educational programs, inspiring Latino students to pursue higher education and contribute to America’s future. To date, more than 2,000 of these volunteers have reached over 6,000 students in New Jersey, New York City and San Antonio.
HISPA’s kick-off event recruits role models from public and private sectors and honors organizational achievements, including the HISPA Role Model Program’s recent expansion to 10 schools in Elizabeth, N.J.; the PSEG Foundation is providing the funding necessary to support this expansion.
This kick-off event marks the organization’s eight year bringing role models to middle school classrooms to share their personal and professional journeys, highlight their accomplishments and encourage students to dream big and—through education—achieve their goals. This year, HISPA will surpass 500 school visits, an effort recently recognized by the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics.
“By visiting schools and sharing our stories, we provide hope, and hope is key to overcoming obstacles towards higher education,” says Dr. Ivonne Díaz-Claisse, HISPA President and CEO. “With this education, our Hispanic and Latino students can build the future of America.”
The agenda for the evening includes remarks from Jorge Cardenas—Vice President of PSEG’s Asset Management & Centralized Services, Adelante advisor, and active HISPA Role Model—and Olga Hugelmeyer, Superintendent of Elizabeth Public Schools. HISPA is also excited to formally announce joining forces with two new professional organizations committed to working with our Latino youth: National Society of Hispanic MBAs (NSHMBA) New Jersey and the NJIT Chapter of Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE).
HISPA’s annual corporate partners are Educational Testing Service, Verizon, ESPN, Comcast and Southwest Airlines. In addition to annual partners and the PSEG Foundation, HISPA will receive support from UPS Foundation, Wells Fargo Foundation and PNC Bank towards funding for the HISPA Role Model program in Elizabeth schools.
