Princeton, NJ – National nonprofit organization HISPA (Hispanics Inspiring Students’ Performance and Achievement) is launching VISION 2020: their initiative to share 20,000 inspirational stories to transform students’ lives and build America’s future.
The campaign will be promoted during Hispanic Heritage Month via a series of educational programs and volunteer recruitment events. National Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from September 15 to October 15, is the period when people recognize the contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans to the United States and celebrate the group’s heritage and culture.
When HISPA launched in New Jersey in 2008, they started with the recruitment effort, “100 Role Models in 100 Hours”. Since then, HISPA has steadily grown, expanding to four states and reaching 7,000 students in New Jersey, New York City, San Antonio and South Florida. Their efforts were most recently acknowledged by the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics, which named HISPA a “Bright Spot in Hispanic Education” for its educational programming dedicated to mobilizing Hispanic professionals to serve as role models and encourage Latino students to pursue higher education.
Having come so far, HISPA has set its sights even higher with VISION 2020, which aims to mobilize thousands of Latino professional to share 20,000 inspirational stories with local youth by year 2020. Volunteers will serve as role models in HISPA’s educational programs, visiting students in their school classrooms, welcoming students to tour workplaces during corporate visits, and uniting on university campuses for youth conferences, all of which emphasize the importance of continuing education.
HISPA is celebrating the launch of their VISION 2020 campaign at a number of outreach events, including two volunteer recruitment events in September. First will be the New Jersey and New York-area HISPA Role Model Program Kick-Off and Recruiting Event on September 28 at 6:00 pm, hosted by UPS and their Latino Business Resource Group, Crecer, which is Spanish for “to grow”. Guests will hear from a variety of leaders, including keynote speaker, UPS Chief Information Officer Juan Perez. On September 30 at 5:30 pm, HISPA will hold a Role Model Program Kick-Off and Recruiting event in Miami, FL, hosted by the City of Miami Office of the Mayor. Guests will hear welcome remarks from Mayor Tomás Regalado and from keynote speaker Wifredo Ferrer, U.S. Attorney of the Southern District of Florida.
HISPA’s celebration continues on October 7 with its 20th Youth Conference, themed, “Take Action! Achieve your Dreams”. Hosted by Columbia University in a partnership with Columbia Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers and funded by ESPN and ESPN Goal! as well as Verizon and Verizon HSO, HISPA with gather 150 students and 85 volunteers for an inspirational full day of educational hands-on activities.
Dr. Ivonne Díaz-Claisse, founder and CEO of HISPA, stressed the organization’s commitment to eradicate the lack of role models as a reason why Latino youth don’t pursue education: “We are committed to mobilizing Latino professionals to join us in this quest. HISPA does all the behind-the-scenes work so our volunteers spend as much time as possible sharing their inspirational stories with students, showcasing the important role education played in their successful lives.”
HISPA will be busy visiting companies and universities throughout Hispanic Heritage Month, delivering their learning series, “With the Power of our Stories: We Empower our Communities, Companies and Careers”. They are already scheduled to visit ESPN on September 19, Thomson Reuters on September 22, Visa on October 3, and AT&T on October 5.
HISPA’s Annual Partners are AT&T, Comcast, ESPN, ETS, Verizon, Visa, and Southwest Airlines, HISPA’s official airline partner.
