HISPA mobilizes Latino professionals to visit local classrooms, share their stories, and introduce students to college and career opportunities. This event will bring together professionals dedicated to inspiring Hispanic youth to achieve their full potential.
In 2007, HISPA CEO Dr. Ivonne Díaz-Claisse coordinated a visit to Perth Amboy school. She had told the administration I was conducting a ‘HISPA Role Model Program’ session as a volunteer, and they welcomed her. That day, with the students gathered around, she shared her story, her journey from Puerto Rico to Cornell and University of Maryland to earning her Ph.D. at Arizona State. She shared the obstacles she faced but reminded them of what her mother always told her: “soñar no cuesta nada”. She continued to dream, and dreamed of mobilizing her friends, their friends, and Latinos everywhere to do what she did: surround yourself with students and share your story. She dreamed of HISPA.
HISPA has since made over 1,200 classroom visits and reached more than 13,000 students. The Kick-Off event will continue HISPA’s movement to share 20,000 stories by year 2020, an effort that continues thanks to the support of the PSEG Foundation, the Wells Fargo Foundation, the Center for Hispanic Policy, Research and Development, ETS, Southwest Airlines, UPS, the Elizabeth Board of Education, Investors Bank, and PNC Bank.
