Youth Conferences

Princeton, NJ, June 6 – Close to 150 students from New Jersey public schools will gather at Princeton University’s Frist Hall on June 7 to learn from Latino professionals about academic achievement, higher education and careers. Organized by Hispanics Inspiring Students’ Achievement and Performance (HISPA) and hosted by Princeton University’s Human Resources department, the fifth annual Youth Conference has as its theme “Take Action! Achieve Your Dreams.”

The 8th graders from Newark, New Brunswick, Perth Amboy, Princeton and Red Bank will explore career options through hands-on workshops and interaction with Latino professionals from NJ based corporations. AT&T representatives, for example, will present “exploring big data and real-time visualization,” while PSEG professionals will speak to “exploring the science behind sustainability.”.

“The students will never forget this experience,” said Dr. Ivonne Díaz-Claisse, President of HISPA and a former AT&T data analyst. “The conference features motivational speakers, a panel of university students discussing life after high school, workshops in a variety of STEM-related fields and plenty of Latino role models.”

The agenda includes welcome remarks by Romy E. Riddick, Director, Diversity and Inclusion from Princeton University’s Office of Human Resources, keynote speaker Dr. María Garlock, Assistant Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Director, Program in Architecture and Engineering at Princeton University, and Nathaniel Santana, ETS Systems Analyst as the inspirational speaker.

Connecting Latino students with role models, particularly in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math), and exposing them to what it is like to be in a university setting are at the heart of the program. HISPA increases awareness of the importance of excelling in high school to a successful future and gives students the confidence to believe they can overcome any obstacle and achieve their goals.

The Lead Conference Sponsor is AT&T, and the Event Sponsor is NOVARTIS. Collaborator companies are Bristol-Myers Squibb, Johnson & Johnson, Merck, PSEG, Siemens and Verizon.

HISPA’s annual partners are Educational Testing Service (ETS) and Southwest Airlines, HISPA 2013 Official Airline Partner.
